At a recent business networking event, Lord Bilimoria (founder of Cobra Beer) spoke about his experiences when building his business. When interviewed, he said that there were three things that one should have if you’re going to be successful and get through difficult times:
If you’re starting out in business, you probably won’t have a strong brand name, or even a brand that is known. Friends and family can be supportive, yet all too often they can kill your dreams too. The one thing you can do from the get go is having and displaying integrity. This means more than being professional when in front of potential clients. Some people don’t even achieve that. Take the case of the guy in the above photo. A bit of larking around with the photographer and having your sponsor badge on upside down is the sort of thing I’d expect from my 7-year old great nephew and not a businessman. Did this person not think how stupid he looked? I dread to think what impression he made on others. And then there’s the shabby looking shirt and tie. Look, I know we all have the occasional wardrobe meltdown but men, at the very least, should dress around the neck in an acceptable manner. Because if you don’t, you could get ‘marked down’.
Being successful in business is about getting lots of things right. Having a website that’s easily accessible, a call to action and above all, how one handle’s oneself in public.
People want to deal with those that make them feel comfortable and reassured.
Don’t make it hard for people to do business with you.
